World Premier!
Internationally recognized jazz pianist and composer Kenny Werner will join the NCJRO for the world premier of an extended composition for soloists James Ketch, trumpet and Stephen Anderson, jazz faculty members of the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The project that is making the creation of this new work possible is called the 10x10 commissioning project instituted by Emil Kang, Executive Director for the Arts at Carolina and the Department of Music. Each year, for ten years, the Office of the EDA will support the creation of a new composition for a faculty member or faculty ensemble in our Department of Music. Join us for the premier of this exciting new jazz score and meet one of the world’s most gifted and respected jazz pianists.
Saturday, November 22, 2008 NCJRO presents:
"Deck the Halls: Holiday Big Band Extravaganza!"
Nothing “Decks the Halls” like the fiery sounds of an 18-piece big band. Featuring the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn adaptation of the Nutcracker Suite, plus music from the Bands of Stan Kenton, Gordon Goodwin, Glenn Miller, and others, the NCJRO will heat up the Holidays with their delightful brand of big band jazz. A seasonal favorite for 15 years! Swing in the Holidays with the NCJRO.
Thursday, February 26, 2009 NCJRO presents:
"The Jazz Sound" as part the excitement of the 32nd Carolina Jazz Festival. The Sound of Jazz is unmistakable. Jazz is identified by sounds and rhythms, like the brilliance of Louis Armstrong's trumpet, the subtlety of Billie Holiday's interpretation of a ballad, or the moods evoked by a startling composition or arrangement by Duke Ellington or Gil Evans. The NCJRO, along with the 2009 Carolina Jazz festival artists-in-residence (yet to be named) will explore the riches of the jazz art in our journey to explore "The Jazz Sound."
Friday, April 24, 2009 NCJRO presents:
"We Swing America—The NCJRO celebrates the Great American Songbook”
In a program featuring both the 18 piece NCJRO Jazz Orchestra and several small groups from within the NCJRO, the timeless music known as the American Songbook will be placed front and center in night celebrating Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen, and others. This will be a night to listen to the songs we all LOVE! |

Duke Ellington brought to jazz the concept of the extended jazz composition. The Far East Suite chronicles the experiences of the Ellington Orchestra in the Far East between 1963 -1966. Ellington’s tribute to William Shakespeare creates fascinating vignettes about such characters as Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, and Hamlet.
